Caritasstift St. Josef: restructuring successfully completed

Caritasstift Sankt Josef gGmbH in Verden/Aller filed for insolvency proceedings in self-administration on 1 July 2025. The competent local court in Verden followed the application by order of 3 July 2025 and appointed lawyer Georg Schloenbach of BBL as provisional custodian, who, together with his team colleague Joseph Bock, supervised the self-administration proceedings from a legal perspective and played a key role in advancing the negotiations.

The insolvency application was driven by the need to create economically viable prospects in a challenging care market. High staff costs, long waiting times for reimbursement from health insurance funds and a heavy administrative burden associated with care documentation made it difficult to operate on a cost-covering basis. At the same time, demand from those in need of care and their relatives continues to rise steadily, providing a solid foundation for the company’s successful reorganisation.

In a restructuring involving a transfer, Luehrsen Care Plus, part of the Luehrsen Investment Group, took over the business operations with effect from 1 May 2026 and now continues the care and support of residents in Verden as the new operator. The agreement provides for the transfer of around 100 employees.

The investor process was supported by a team from Puke Dresen Mall; the care facility received assistance with liquidity planning from Voige & Partner. As authorised representative, Dr Hans-Joachim Berner, partner at the law firm KÖSTERBERNER, advised and assisted the management of Caritasstift Sankt Josef gGmbH during the restructuring.

The company provides care services with around 85 places at its Verden/Aller site. In the last financial year, it generated revenue of just over EUR 5 million.
